N-Hotel

Boutique hotel, Aegean, Greece, 2017

The existing hotel complex built in different phases between the 1950’s and the 1970’s is renovated to become a contemporary five star holiday destination. The existing “non-compliant” structure found at a feral state has to yet exploit the benefits of this location such as the proximity to the water, the abundance of sunlight and the dry but intimate landscape. Carefully cleared from unnecessary additions that impede circulation and views, the existing complex is organized around a central courtyard where a concrete platform with a swimming pool is inserted to celebrate the sun and the island landscape. Despite their incoherent arrangement, the existing buildings are treated as a sequence of episodes around the common space characterized by a simple grid of horizontal and vertical planes. Some planes are extended where necessary to provide intimate terraces for the hotel rooms. The entry and support functions are placed underneath the rooms taking advantage of the site’s topography and a perimeter service corridor is carved allowing a continuous flow of back of house activities maintaining the integrity of the courtyard as a platform of pure leisure.
